Sending a letter to Nepal Government on 21 September 2020, the UN experts urged the government to amend discriminatory Citizenship Act 2006 Amendment Bill. Victor Madrigal-Borloz – Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity; Dubravka Šimonovic – Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences; and Elizabeth Broderick – Chair Rapporteur of the Working Group on discrimination against women and girls expressed their serious concerns over the discriminatory provisions against women, trans and gender-diverse persons incorporated in the bill.
On 7 August 2018, a bill to amend the Citizenship Act 2006 was registered in the House of Representatives. On 21 June 2020, its Parliamentary Committee on State Affairs and Good Governance passed the bill with amendments and presented it to the House of Representatives for deliberation.
